Tybee Island Community Garden

Tybee community project with both individual plots and a communal shared spaces. Plots are $50.00 for a 4×8 ft space.

INTRODUCING – Work Day

Our first work day is planned for this upcoming Saturday March 13th from 10 am Our garden location between the YMCA and the Old School.

What to bring

garden implements: shovels, rakes, etc. for amending the soil and preparing the beds

construction tools: screw drivers, circular saws, extension cords, etc. for building the raised frames

pot luck: bring finger foods only to nibble on while we work

personal attributes: enthusiasm, cooperation, joy

TO RESERVE YOUR SPACE

We will begin selection of plots on Saturday March 13th. Please contact Karen Kelly and let her know your interest in reserving a space. Karen will send you an application via email. To reserve space you need to fill out application with space fee and send or bring it to our first work day.

Spaces are limited and are available on a first come first reserved bases.

Garden Tips

Trees It takes more than good soil, sun, and nutrients to ensure success in a garden. Plants have to grow well with one another. Some are friends and some are foes! Here are some examples of plant companions.

• Dill and basil planted among tomatoes protect the tomatoes from hornworms, and sage scattered about the cabbage patch reduces injury from cabbage moths.
• Marigolds are as good as gold when grown with just about any garden plant, repelling beetles, nematodes, and even animal pests.
• Some companions act as trap plants, luring insects to themselves. Nasturtiums, for example, are so favored by aphids that the devastating insects will flock to them instead of other plants.
• Carrots, dill, parsley, and parsnips attract garden heroes-praying mantises, ladybugs, and spiders-that dine on insect pests.
• While white garlic and onions repel a plethora of pests and make excellent neighbors for most garden plants, the growth of beans and peas is stunted in their presence.
• Potatoes and beans grow poorly in the company of sunflowers, and although cabbage and cauliflower are closely related, they don’t like each other at all.

Much of companion planting is common sense: Lettuce, radishes, and other quick-growing plants sown between hills of melons or winter squash will mature and be harvested long before these vines need more leg room.

Tomato Pie

Great with anything, especially Shrimp and Grits

INGREDIENTS:

• 10 fresh basil leaves, chopped
• 2 Tomatoes, (real mater sandwich tomatoes)
• 1 prebaked 9-inch deep dish pie crust
• 1 cup grated Kraft Four Cheeses
• 1 cup grated Kraft Sharp cheddar cheese
• 3 table spoons of fresh grated Parmesan Cheese
• 1 cup mayonnaise; salt and pepper to taste

Directions: (Preheat oven to 350 degrees)
Bake your pie crust. Place the tomatoes in a colander in the sink in 1 layer. Sprinkle with salt and allow to drain for 10 minutes or longer, if you don’t the pie will fall apart. Layer the tomato slices. Season with salt and pepper. Put a piece of fresh basil on top of each tomato slice. Combine the grated Sharp Cheddar and four cheeses and mayonnaise together. Sprinkle the Parmesan Cheese on top. Spread mixture on top of the tomatoes and bake for 30 minutes until lightly browned. To serve: cut into slices and serve warm.

There are many variations to this recipe. You can crumble bacon on top of the tomato slices, add onion, or cooked squash. Go wild and try something with your own taste buds.
